Preparing for Adulthood
Preparation for Adulthood is a compulsory theme that runs through all Educational, Health and Care Plans from Key Stage 3 onwards. Targets towards this are planned and written during the Annual Review in Year 9 to help students prepare for the four adulthood outcomes which are:
-
Employment,
-
Good Health,
-
Independent Living
-
Friends, relationships and inclusion

In KS4 students start to work on ASDAN qualifications (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network) - these are courses run by a UK Educational Charity which are designed to engage, elevate and empower young people (11-25) through skills based learning in a flexible, activity-based curricula that enable learners to achieve in ways that traditional, exam-heavy academic paths may not allow.
In Year 10 students follow the ASDAN New Horizons programme, working on key skills such as personal responsibility, social interactions, health awareness, citizenship and developing relationships. In Year 11 the focus moves on the ASDAN Transition Challenge programme which includes areas such as making correct choices, taking the lead in situations and moving forward to the next phase of education by strengthening core skills in areas such as English, Maths, ICT, D&T and the humanities.
In KS5 we move the focus onto preparing for the world of work, following the ASDAN Workright programme, with topics including understanding Health & Safety rules, how to deal with emergencies, good attendance, timekeeping, personal presentation, working in a team and asking for help and advice - this all links in with our comprehensive work experience programme in Year 13.
